Cannondale Gila Pro Dc 45 Disc Bike Review

The Synapse sits firmly in the endurance road bike category, but Cannondale says information technology differs from its other route bikes thanks to its ride characteristics, which are focused more around rider comfort than flat-out speed.

  • BikeRadar's long-term test bikes
  • Best road bikes: how to choose the right one for y'all

The Synapse is bachelor in iii different frame versions ranging from the cheaper aluminium model to a standard carbon frame, and and then a Hullo-Mod version which has a higher strength to weight ratio. I'thousand testing the mid-range Carbon Synapse Disc Ultegra model.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The 32mm tyres should handle rough roads and the odd gravel trail with no problems.

Felix Smith

It would be fair to say that I've got a peachy interest in gravel riding, which is lucky considering, arguably, bikes designed for endurance have started merging with their gravel counterparts.

The Synapse is no exception, and with tyre clearance upwards to 32mm and its shock-absorbing SAVE tech, information technology'due south clearly been designed to accept on gravel roads, such equally those constitute in ultra-endurance races such equally the Transcontinental.

I plan to test information technology out on mixed surfaces and some big miles on tarmac over the course of the yr to see how information technology handles the different terrain.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra long-term review update three

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The bike has had a serious upgrade from its original spec.

Felix Smith

The wheel has undergone some pretty pregnant upgrades since the summer, including Enve'southward near affordable, but nevertheless rather expensive Foundation 45 wheelset (£ane,800 / $1,600 / €1,800 / AU$2,250), and a Cannondale SAVE seatpost and Fabric Line S saddle in a bid to add a bit more comfort.

The Specialized Mimic saddle I'd used on the bike hadn't been particularly uncomfortable, but I'm still searching for my perfect saddle.

Fabric Line S saddle
I've non been on many ballsy rides this year, but the Material Line-S saddle was comfortable right from the beginning.

Felix Smith

Fifty-fifty though my dreams of riding huge distances day later day have not been a reality this year, due to on-going knee issues, I've been able to refine the bike and my bikepacking gear to what I think is a very capable and competitive ultra-distance setup.

Expensive hoops

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Foundation Series wheels from Enve are slightly more than affordable than the brand'south other wheelsets.

Felix Smith

The beautiful Enve Foundation 45 wheels replaced Hunt's Superdura Dynamo on the front end and the at present slightly outdated version of the FastForward F3 on the rear. Equally the name suggests, these are 45mm deep carbon rims with Enve'south own hubs.

This deeper section rim promises better aerodynamics without incurring a big weight punishment and at a 1,540g claimed weight for the pair, they are certainly lighter than the Fulcrum 600DB wheels that come specced on this Ultegra model.

The stock Fulcrums weighed 1,690g for the pair and, although they can exist prepare tubeless, they have an internal width of 17mm compared to the Enve's 21mm.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
This is the clearance left after plumbing equipment 32mm tyres to the Synapse.

Felix Smith

This means that tyres fitted to the Enves will non only measure slightly wider for the same weight but likewise reduce the light bulb shape profile of the tyre, which tin happen as a upshot of a wider tyre in a narrower rim.

The advantage? Meliorate contact with the road and the promise of more than grip and comfort.

The Enve Foundation wheels are considerably cheaper alternatives too, when compared to more established wheelsets. At £1,800 / $1,600 / €ane,800 / AU$2,250 they aren't cheap, but they do represent effectually a £1,000 saving from the cost of other like wheelsets, such as Enve's SES 3.4 AR.

How has Enve managed to do this? While they are however manufactured in the same Odgen manufactory in Utah, by changing to a hookless rim contour, sticking to disc only and using slightly cheaper hubs, the company has been able to increment manufacturing efficiency and reduce that premium price-tag.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Enve Foundation 45 Wheels certainly brand the bike look faster.

Felix Smith / Immediate Media

Without a current of air tunnel at my disposal it's difficult to measure the aerodynamic advantage the wheels provide. However, on the start windy day I rode the cycle I felt a slight alter in handling, but having ridden them at present for a couple of months, I can say I haven't noticed the wind blowing me off line and information technology has improved the ride no end.

The combination of a wider tyre and more than aerodynamically focused wheels has resulted in a noticeable improvement in comfort, while still retaining the power to plough through potholes and damaged road surfaces without flinching.

Although I'one thousand not able to dorsum it up with numbers, I am confident that the bike is faster, particularly over rougher roads. Admitting an expensive upgrade, the wheels have unleashed the Carbon Synapse'southward endurance race pedigree.

Anecdotally, I also noticed as soon equally I rode out on the Enves a slight force per unit area to ride fast. Whether this was because of the audible rumble of the deep department carbon rims or the fact I had £1,800 worth of wheels spinning below me, I tin't exist certain.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
They might not exist set up tubeless correct now simply the Exposure 32s have been with me for many happy miles.

Felix Smith

The rims are hookless, so I had to replace the Continental Grand Prix 5000 28mm tyres, since they're not on Enve'south compatible tyres list.

Thankfully, my tried and tested WTB Exposure 32mm tyres are, and with their increased internal rim width, I'm now able to get more comfort out of the Synapse than with my previous wheel and tyre setup.

It is worth noting that I failed to fix up this combination tubeless. This was due to the tyres suffering from several holes too large to fill with sealant, sustained from my Transatlantic Way ride in 2019. To really get the most out of the wheels, I do intend to set them upward tubeless with an approved tyre.

Added comforts

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
Cannondale'southward Salvage Carbon Road Seatpost is said to offer "subtle compliance".

Felix Smith

I also changed the regular aluminium seatpost to Cannondale's Salve model, which is fabricated from carbon fibre and is said to add "subtle compliance" to the already damped ride experience.

It is difficult to feel changes in condolement to the ride, though, which I think is because the bicycle is already very well damped. Perhaps it would be more noticeable on a stiffer race wheel, but after a very long ride I'chiliad grateful for any kind of additional comfort.

Unfortunately, due to a knee injury this year, I oasis't been able to test the Synapse nether total endurance weather, just I'yard optimistic my rehabilitation volition put me in a good position to relish some longer rides this winter.

Fabric Line S saddle
The brusk saddle features a wide rear to help with stability, while the brusque olfactory organ helps to maintain a more aero position.

Felix Smith

For some reason, I have always been able to concord a better level of consistency with my training over autumn and winter, and I'chiliad actually looking forward to modifying the Synapse to make the virtually of it. With that in heed, I've got tubeless tyres, mudguards and the dynamo wheel on my list for my next update.

Older updates continue beneath.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra long-term review update two

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Synapse is a real joy to ride in these times, despite shorter outings.

Felix Smith

I've non made whatsoever significant changes to the Synapse for this update because the last few weeks take been all virtually managing my on-going left and right knee troubles.

I have lowered the bar elevation a touch, replaced the Fabric Scoop saddle with a Specialized Mimic and made a slight change in saddle angle, though.

However, what remains the same is the Synapse's amazing treatment and comfort that'due south impressed me since I began testing it in February. Merely I do have some pretty heady upgrades planned for my next update, and then stay tuned for that.

I found the stock Material Scoop lacking in comfort and a little harsh over bumps, I e'er struggled to get truly comfortable. So, afterward searching for some fourth dimension for a saddle better suited to my needs, I settled on Specialized'southward Mimic, which is an development of the well-known Power saddle.

Bear in listen, saddle comfort is extremely personal, but afterwards around 800km on the Scoop it won't exist a saddle I go back to using.

Aero gains

Since my rides haven't been particularly long or far from home during the global pandemic, the actress comfort I've had from the relatively tall forepart-end hasn't been worth the, albeit probably small, aerodynamic disadvantage.

As a result, I have dropped the bar tiptop by another 10mm since the last update and feel the confined are now in a more natural position. The ride feels considerably more sporty when compared to the initial setup.

In the future, should I want to add aero extensions for longer, multi-day rides, I'd set these a minimum of 20mm college than the current position of the handlebars. Although difficult to say without setting up, I believe this could give me a proficient compromise between condolement and aero advantage.

After making the bar height change, I felt myself catastrophe up on the nose of the saddle, especially during harder efforts. Then I've tilted the saddle nose up past a few degrees to help me detect a more than sustainable position, not forgetting to lower the seatpost by a few millimetres to recoup.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
Dropping the stem by another 10mm has given me a more neutral riding position.

Felix Smith

Hurting-free riding

Reversing long-term knee damage is a notoriously difficult job and, having had a cracking spell of rehabilitation with a period of pain-free riding, I brutal back to the knee niggles that had previously dominated my rides. It came at the tiptop of my latest build up in fitness, when presumably I overcooked information technology.

That cursory experience of pain-gratis riding felt so proficient and I'm determined to not push button too difficult likewise early on again, so here goes a chilled-out summertime of riding where my knee rehab comes earlier my fitness.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
I'm going to focus on looking after my trunk rather than riding hard for the fourth dimension being.

Max Wilman

I've been combining my rides with a dedicated stretching plan since January 2020 and focusing on areas of chronic tightness, with some strengthening exercises also.

Metering my imbalance

For a while at present, I've noticed my correct leg is working much harder than the left. Over fourth dimension this has resulted in quite a big imbalance in my torso and although I tin can't quantify the difference all the same, I believe it must exist having an impact on my knees.

Then, for now, I will keep the strengthening exercises to try and address the residual issue and meet how they help my rehab.

Of grade, a double-sided ability meter, such as on a set of Garmin Vector pedals, would allow me to quantify how much of an imbalance is nowadays and track the departure in power between my legs over time. Perhaps this is a test for a future update.

Older updates continue below.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra long-term review update 1

Due to the pandemic and everything that goes with it, I haven't been able to ride much longer than a few hours at a time, which of grade means I'm not really able to find out how the bike fares over longer distances.

Having said that, I am currently working through a knee injury which has plagued me on and off for a few years, so, for at present, shorter and less intense solo rides combined with a rigorous twice a twenty-four hours stretching routine are really helping me to overcome my human knee niggles.

The bike has done a fantastic chore of keeping my spirits loftier though, and the frame'southward compliance still impresses me whenever I ride over lumpy roads.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
Cannondale's SAVE frame engineering science still surprises me with its road buzz reducing design.

Felix Smith

I've spent some time upgrading and optimising the bike for my needs as well, which has been fun.

Unintentional weight savings

Although the Cannondale 3 serial bar and stalk were both fine for the job, and their simple pattern and subtle graphics were decent looking, they were the start function to be swapped out.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
Fizik Cyrano 00 carbon handlebars are a rather lavish upgrade.

Felix Smith

I chose to put on the cute and superlight Fizik Cyrano 00 handlebars. These were used on BikeRadar video manager Joe Norledge'south hill climb bicycle a few seasons ago.

The bars counterbalance simply 182g, but information technology is non my intention to create a weight-weenie Synapse, instead they're just really absurd and a squeamish upgrade over the specced parts.

The Fizik confined are categorised according to their dimensions and flexibility of the rider. These bars sit in the heart of the sizing range and are named the Chameleon, combining a long reach with adequately compact drops for riders with middling flexibility.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Fizik R1 stem finishes the cockpit off nicely. A torque wrench is recommended!

Felix Smith

As for the stem, I couldn't stand up mismatching brands so I picked upwardly a Fizik Cyrano R1 stalk for a bargain price on eBay.

It retains the stock stem'due south 100mm length and +/- 7-caste angle, but again information technology's lighter and since I'll be looking down at the cockpit a fair bit over the course of the yr, it makes me happy.

Like I said earlier, weight is not my overriding business organization for this endurance-focused bicycle, but changing these 2 parts saved 145g.

Swapping the bars meant I could change the bar tape, too. I really similar Enve's 3mm thick tape considering it has a nice soft yet grippy texture that's perfect for an endurance bike.

I wasn't immediately enamoured with its grey color, but I have to say it has grown on me.

Dynamo power

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The SON Delux dynamo front hub offers minimal resistance.

Felix Smith

The stock Fulcrum 600DB wheels were one part I actually wanted to modify on the bike, so I could run a dynamo on the front wheel.

I've fitted a Chase Superdura Dynamo front cycle set up upwardly with the ever-dependable Exposure Revo front lite and Exposure Red Eye on the rear. To secure the wiring to the frame, I've gone with the slightly inelegant solution of good old electrical tape.

I have used this in the by for dynamo lighting and haven't had whatsoever issues, so I have organized religion in the tape!

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
This GPS mount from JRC Components allowed me to get my controls centrally aligned and without cluttering the bars.

Felix Smith

The bling GPS mount from JRC Components that's bolted onto the lower stem mounts has allowed me to mount the Exposure Revo front light at the same time, thanks to the extra-long bolts and spacers supplied with the mount.

This has given the bike a satisfyingly minimalist cockpit, although it's a shame about the messy cables, which I still can't assistance but focus on.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
Although low-cal and well built, these are not gravel wheels.

Felix Smith

I swapped the rear bicycle for a carbon-rimmed Fast Frontwards F3 Disc. The rim is built onto a DT Swiss 240s straight-pull hub that's well known for its simple and like shooting fish in a barrel to service ratchet system freehub, which produces a subdued but deep purr when you freewheel.

There are a number of downsides to the Fast Forward F3 Disc wheel.

Get-go up, it is not tubeless uniform and because I am a tubeless catechumen and have got used to the lack of punctures and lower pressures y'all can accomplish with the arrangement, this can be a scrap frustrating.

The rim is besides narrower than more modern tubeless rims, which ways the tyre is noticeably narrower compared to the Chase Superdura rim upward front, although the Superdura rim is fairly wide at 20mm internal width.

Hard(er) core credentials

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
No creaks or squeaks only yet from Cannondale's BB30 lesser bracket.

Felix Smith

Because the Synapse has confident treatment on mixed surfaces, I've taken the bicycle upwardly and down a small local gravel trail, hopping over small drainage ditches.

While this is swell fun, the F3D rear wheel buckled slightly, suggesting it wasn't congenital quite well plenty to withstand riding at the more audacious cease of the spectrum.

Upgrading the tyres from the Vittoria Rubino Pros to a pair of 28mm Continental GP5000 TL tyres was a worthwhile modify, but obviously I'm currently simply able to run the front tubeless.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
Continental GP5000 TL tyres offer great grip and rolling resistance, just time will tell for their immovability and tubeless reliability.

Felix Smith

The Continentals are known to be some of the all-time performing tyres on the market and I recall they remainder grip and speed very well. Because the Cannondale is such a fun bike to throw effectually a corner, these tyres are a keen match for it.

Should I fancy pushing the Synapse further, away from the road, the tubeless version is too available in a 32mm.

In my initial review (below), I mentioned the Shimano restriction levers felt a little unnerving when descending on the hoods.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
I'm really getting on with the shape of the Shimano Ultegra hydraulic restriction hoods.

Felix Smith

After a few months of riding I feel much more poised, getting used to how the levers move, and with the Ultegra brakes being properly powerful, my conviction has returned.

Unfortunately, I haven't really been able to examination out the endurance abilities of this bike, but information technology continues to exist seriously fun to ride.

At the time of writing, I intend to continue riding regularly non only to assist with my wellbeing just besides the rehabilitation of my knee, which I'grand hoping will get better and stronger as the year progresses.

The original story continues below.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra specifications and details

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The frame'south lines remind me of sinews with a kind of refined, muscular await, merely without being overly ambitious.

Felix Smith

My 54cm Carbon Ultegra model is painted in the blazingly vivid orange "crush" colour, only it's bachelor in blackness if you lot want something more inconspicuous.

There are many different spec levels to choose from only this mid-range Ultegra model weighs in at 8.89kg without pedals.

The frame and fork use BallisTec in their carbon layup process, supposedly taken from military ballistic armour, which is claimed to create a super-tough cloth.

The frame features Cannondale's Salvage PLUS engineering science, which information technology says creates vertical compliance for comfort without sacrificing lateral and torsional stiffness for speed and efficiency. This is near noticeable in the helix-shaped seatstays that bend and shrink under load.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Ultegra-spec parts certainly look the part.

Felix Smith

The drivetrain is mostly made upward of Ultegra parts, including the forepart and rear derailleur, and the hydraulic brakes and the levers.

The 11-34t cassette is Shimano's 105 version, notwithstanding – presumably to salvage some coin.

Since the frame is based around Cannondale's own BB30a bottom subclass platform, information technology'south specced with a Cannondale ane crankset with 50/34-tooth FSA chainrings.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Shimano Ultegra GS rear mech does a lovely job of shifting the chain up and downwards and doesn't find it hard to accomplish the 34-tooth rear sprocket.

Felix Smith

The seatpost, stem and handlebar are all from the Cannondale Three range, and the seatpost measures 25.4mm in diameter, matching that of higher-end carbon models.

At that place'southward a Fabric Scoop Shallow Sport saddle with steel rails and dainty, chunky 3.5mm Cannondale Grip bar tape with gel to round off the contact points.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Cannondale Iii seatpost has a very narrow 25.4mm diameter to assist reduce road fizz.

Felix Smith

Equipped with Fulcrum Racing 600DB wheels with Centerlock hubs and 12mm quick release thru-axles both front and rear, the rims are tubeless uniform, although the Vittoria Rubino Pro 30mm tyres are not. They do comprise graphene in their triple compound however, so that'southward a bonus.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra geometry (size 54cm)

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Cannondale 3 100mm stem is patently, but not in a bad manner.

Felix Smith

Cannondale's claims of the Synapse existence a truthful endurance-focused bike are reflected in its geometry.

I t has a alpine 570mm stack acme, giving a archetype upright position – Cannondale's gravel bicycle, the Topstone, has a similar measurement of 579mm – which suggests the Synapse could make a fun gravel wheel, also.

At 410mm, the chainstays are relatively curt, which should requite the wheel snappy handling, peculiarly in the corners. Information technology will mean it's perhaps not every bit planted and stable at higher speeds or when descending on gravel, though.

A lesser subclass height of 272mm isn't radical simply should assistance get a relatively depression centre of gravity for controlled cornering. For comparison, the Topstone Carbon is 280mm and the Cannondale SuperSix EVO is 271mm on a 54cm frame size.

  • Head bending: 71.7 degrees
  • Seat angle: 73.9 degrees
  • Chainstay: 410mm
  • Seat tube: 480mm
  • Top tube: 547mm
  • Head tube: 161mm
  • Bottom bracket height: 272mm
  • Wheelbase: 1,008mm
  • Stack: 570mm
  • Reach: 382mm

Why did I choose this bike?

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
Removing the seatpost collar not only improves compliance but also looks clean and uncluttered.

Felix Smith

The Cannondale Synapse is not designed for dart finishes, nor is it a wheel built for pure climbing. What it claims to do best is provide a comfortable place to pedal all mean solar day and all night, if that's your jam, and non be confined to just tarmac yet notwithstanding be agile and able to handle speed.

As a rider that enjoys riding longer distances, and is never going to be finishing in the top 10 in a hill climb or road race, I appreciate these qualities. Choosing the Synapse to ride over the coming twelvemonth seemed like a sensible option and I'g interested to see if the crash-land-smoothing technology on the bike will requite me the edge later on multiple hours riding.

Thank you to my fortunate position equally a videographer on BikeRadar's YouTube channel, this is the first time I'one thousand going to 'ain' a road-specific cycle for a longer period of fourth dimension.

In the by, I've ridden cyclocross and gravel bikes for drib-bar riding, so I'm eager to find out how different the Synapse will experience compared to a rigid gravel bike such equally the Lauf Anywhere, which was my long-term steed for 2019.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
Cannondale suggests a maximum of 32mm tyres for the Synapse – maybe the bike'due south about limiting factor when information technology comes to gravel riding.

Felix Smith

Certain features on the Synapse, such as clearance for 32mm tyres, aren't a far cry from the adventure style bikes I have ridden in the past and I'grand curious to see how it volition blend its obvious road intentions with its ability to ride off-road.

If it lives upward to the claims of taking on "wilder" riding then this could actually be a very capable and quick wheel.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra initial setup

At 177cm alpine, I opted for the 54cm, every bit instructed by Cannondale.

To get the bicycle set up initially, in that location were no proprietary fittings to worry virtually.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
Information technology is a shame the tyres aren't tubeless uniform.

Felix Smith

I adjusted the brake lever reach so that it was closer to the bars and pumped the Vittoria Rubino Pro tyres to 55psi, a relatively low pressure given their 30mm width.

However, they aren't tubeless, so taking care to avoid potholes is withal important.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Textile Scoop Shallow Sport saddle with steel rails — only time will tell if it suites my derrière.

Felix Smith

The Material Scoop saddle is relatively long, especially compared to the Specialized Ability saddle I accept ridden in the past.

I moved it rearward in the runway after the first ride because I felt a little besides forward of the pedals, and lowered the seatpost slightly to compensate for this.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The seatpost is held in place by a wedge that'southward well beneath the meridian tube, creating more flex and more comfort.

Felix Smith

The seatpost clamp is hidden underneath the height tube and sits quite deep into the frame, which ways some short Allen keys might struggle to reach the bolt.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra ride impressions

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
Shorter chainstays make for quick handling and fun descending.

Max Wilman

On the first ride, I instantly noticed the tall stack peak and super-smooth feel over cobbles and imperfections in the road. Information technology was also incredibly placidity both in terms of freehub noise and full general chatter.

It felt very responsive when cornering. Tight bends are enjoyable and, on my first ride, I found myself turning a little sharper than I was expecting.

A few corners subsequently, I rapidly got used to the feeling, which, together with the frame'due south compliance, makes for a fun yet very polish riding experience.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The oversized lesser bracket helps to deliver smooth and efficient ability transfer into the drivetrain.

Max Wilman

I noticed right away that the tubed Vittoria Rubino Pro tyres held the bike back a fiddling and I feel the ride would be enhanced with the ability to run lower pressures afforded past tubeless setups.

But I did feel at home pretty quickly when descending, attributing this to the frame's road-smoothing Relieve engineering.

DoubleTap habits die hard

I constitute the movement of the Shimano Ultegra brake levers slightly unnerving at first.

Shimano levers require an inward shift stroke to alter gear, and beingness used to SRAM'southward DoubleTap levers I've developed a habit of using the rigidity of the lever for stability, so when braking with Shimano I observe the lever pushes to the side slightly, which doesn't provide me with confidence when descending.

Hopefully I can get over this!

The Ultegra hydraulic disc brakes exercise a superb task, though, and directly away felt very dependable, allowing me to brake later on than I usually would.

I oasis't noticed whatsoever excessive noise from them yet, although I've non ridden them in the city, which, when information technology's raining, seems to exist a sure way to contaminate the pads and rotors.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
160mm rotors and Ultegra hydraulic calipers make for seriously controlled braking.

Felix Smith

After a couple of initial rides to help setup the bike, I felt a modest corporeality of play from the forepart.

This felt very much similar the headset was loose, merely after a bit of tinkering I realised the movement was actually coming from the brake rotor.

The Shimano Centerlock RT30 rotors were torqued to the recommended amount, only, despite this, with the front end restriction and some force applied forwards and backwards, the rotor was able to move a pocket-size amount.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Cannondale Three handlebars with thick and grippy 3.5mm Grip bar record are perfect for long rides.

Felix Smith

The three.5mm Cannondale Grip bar tape with gel is a bang-up addition to the bike and not only adds a lot of comfort but feels dainty and grippy, too. This is an important component of an endurance wheel and an area that could have been overlooked.

BB30 bug? Non yet!

Climbing on the Synapse is helped by the oversized BB30a bottom bracket. The original class of this bottom subclass was adopted by Cannondale dorsum in 2000, and adding stiffness to the frame is its biggest plus.

When climbing out the saddle I actually felt the bike transferring my power efficiently and, unsurprisingly, it feels wonderfully smooth.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
I felt the oversized bottom subclass helped to deliver smooth and efficient ability transfer into the drivetrain.

Max Wilman

I've seen reports of BB30a bottom brackets developing noises over time, so it'll exist interesting to meet how I get on.

It'due south a looker

I really similar how the Synapse looks and the frame's lines remind me of sinews, with a kind of refined, muscular await that isn't overly aggressive.

I peculiarly similar the divide in the seat tube as it meets the bottom bracket shell.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The beautifully clean and polish frame is spoilt by the mess of cables upfront.

Felix Smith

Although it does have internal cable routing, the brake and gear cables look messy at the forepart of the cycle. This does spoil the otherwise handsome appearance and, although non necessarily important to some, probably doesn't raise its aerodynamic backdrop.

I've also plant it difficult to mount a compact handlebar bag since the outer cables get in the way.

At just shy of 9kg and with a price tag of £two,700 some might expect it to weigh less. All the same, it is important to think that this is a cycle designed for going the altitude in relative comfort, rather than being optimised for brusk, full-on efforts.

Information technology hasn't been designed with aerodynamics at forepart of mind, either, but since ultra-distance racing is taking off around the earth could be the side by side stride for the Synapse range.

If yous're racing thousands of kilometres, an aero reward seems like an obvious consideration, b ut for me, comfort, conditioning and rehabilitation of my knee are all more important than all-out speed this year.

Cannondale Synapse Disc Ultegra upgrades

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The showtime things I bolted on were the Lezyne Period side-loading bottle cages.

Felix Smith

Before I had taken the Synapse for a proper ride I installed two Lezyne Catamenia side-loading bottle cages.

These accept to exist my favourite bottle cages because I tin can use a acme-tube style frame pack and still get bottles in and out. They are super-calorie-free but tough and, despite the side loading design, I have never lost a bottle, even when gravel racing.

The areas where I tin can see meaningful upgrades made are the wheels and tyres.

The Fulcrum Racing 600DB wheels aren't bad; they are tubeless-prepare, take sealed cartridge bearings and durable brass nipples. Even so, the internal width of 17mm isn't very wide for a bicycle that comes with 30mm tyres as standard and, at 1,690g for the pair, they aren't particularly calorie-free for a wheel that costs £2,700.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
The Fulcrum Centerlock hubs accept sealed cartridge bearings.

Felix Smith

Upgrading the wheels to something with a wider profile and lower weight would be an like shooting fish in a barrel operation win. I'd be interested in some deeper department aero rims too for long-distance rides because there could be meaning aerodynamic gains to exist had.

At 30mm, the Rubino Pro tyres are a good width for taking the edge off poor road surfaces, but since they aren't tubeless compatible, the operation gains of a modernistic wide tyre cannot exist fully taken advantage.

I'd like to effort a fast tubeless tyre like the Schwalbe Pro One or the Continental GP5000 in 28mm or 32mm widths. This would allow me to run lower pressures and likewise reduce the likelihood of punctures.

During winter, I was using the Chase Superdura Dynamo Disc bike to power an Exposure Revo front calorie-free and Redeye rear lite. I used this setup for the 2,000km Transatlantic Fashion ride I attempted in 2019. I was absolutely converted to the dynamo. Having guaranteed lighting not but increases prophylactic on the road but also means I take a bike that volition always be gear up for a ride no thing what the conditions outside.

The SON Delux hub is claimed to have twenty per cent less resistance than its standard dynamo hubs and, at around 400g, the weight penalty is near non-existent when compared to a non-dynamo setup requiring batteries for lights.

The Superdura rim has a super-broad 20mm internal width significant tyres take a larger surface area for more grip and in some cases more than speed. I believe this would be the perfect lucifer for the Synapse and I'm really looking forrard to getting information technology set.

The Fabric Scoop saddle has mostly good reviews from riders, so I program to stick with information technology for longer rides to see how it feels. Saddles can take some time to get a feel for, and even though I am tempted to put on my Specialized Mimic saddle, I volition hold off for now.

Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra endurance road bike
I instantly got on well with the mechanical Ultegra hydraulic brake hoods.

The Cannondale Three bar and stalk are basic just functional and non-offensive to look at, only I have some Fizik Cyrano 00 bars kindly donated by BikeRadar'southward Joe Norledge that I'1000 planning to fit. They are extremely light at 180g and would give the bike a rather classy finish.

I also have some fairly controversial grey Enve bar tape, which I plan to wrap them in.
